Willis conquered a colossal field of 3,485 entries in Event #3: $500 Kickoff No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout, another new addition this year, snatching his first gold bracelet and $175,578 in prize money. Wang didn’t go home empty-handed, though, snagging a respectable $117,056 for his runner-up finish. Willis’ triumph in the WSOP Kickoff eclipses his previous best live tournament score of $10,756, achieved with a seventh-place finish at the 2019 Venetian DeepStack Extravaganza. “Coming off the first event I played and scoring a huge win is a dream come true,” Willis said, beaming with pride after winning the WSOP bracelet. Willis entered the final day as the chip leader and never looked back, attributing his success to a combination of skill, the momentum gained late on Day 2, and those crucial “get your chips in” moments. “During my professional poker days 10-15 years ago, those critical spots often didn’t always go my way,” Willis confessed. “But this time, everything fell into place. His journey to victory was paved with pivotal hands, including a crucial Day 2 showdown where he called an all-in with pocket kings, facing jacks and Q3 suited. Willis recounted the hand, “I was fifth or sixth in chips when someone shoved all in, another big stack re-raised all in, and I had kings in the big blind. I called and faced jacks and Q3 suited. The flop came 2, 4, 5. I had to dodge an Ace, a Jack, a 6, and I did.
