- 5 Minutes Read ShareTweetWhatsAppA jaw-dropping 18,403 poker hopefuls – a number so colossal it shattered WSOP records, making it the sixth-largest live bracelet event in history – descended upon the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, transforming the venues into a high-stakes battleground for Event #5: $1,000 Mystery Millions at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP). This staggering turnout also set a new benchmark for bracelet events with a buy-in of $1,000 or more. After four gruelling starting flights and two additional days of intense poker warfare, a lone warrior emerged from the fray: Australia’s Malcolm Trayner (cover image). The Turramurra resident seized a life-changing $1 Million top prize and his coveted first gold bracelet, marking the 34th WSOP bracelet claimed by an Australian and catapulting Trayner’s career to new heights. This monumental victory dwarfed his previous best cash of $125,495 earned as the runner-up in a $10,000 AUD buy-in event at the World Poker Tour Australia festival last fall. In a heart-pounding heads-up duel, Trayner outmanoeuvred Carson Richards, sending the American player home with $536,080 for his runner-up finish. Aussie Aussie Aussie!!! I made a few mistakes earlier on, like acting out of turn and things like that. But once I settled in, it was just a matter of doing what I’ve done many times before, both online and live. Just playing the final table and trying to disassociate from the money, focusing on the chips in front of me and trying to win everyone else’s chips. That was my goal.” As for his plans to celebrate the life-changing prize, Trayner revealed,“Have a nice dinner, get all the boys out for a really nice treat. I have no idea what to do next, apart from a nice dinner and maybe flying my girlfriend business class or something.” The Mystery Millions event itself was a spectacle, amassing a monstrous $16,199,920 prize pool, the largest ever for its size. While Trayner was the sole player to snag a seven-figure payout from the main prize pool, the mystery bounty component crowned two additional millionaires: Valentyn Shabelnyk and DJ Buckley. Each $1,000 buy-in contributed $300 to this thrilling lottery, with prizes ranging from $1,000 to a life-altering $1 Million. Bracelet winner Roberto Romanello and ninth-place finisher Jake Brown also joined the high-roller club, claiming the $500,000 and $250,000 bounties, respectively.
